James Franklin Carwile papers, 1840-1991 (bulk, 1956-1959).

Including 11 letters, 1956-1959, written to his grandnieces Roberta Marsh and Dorothy Marsh Hucks, chiefly reminiscences of his life in the American West, with short poems and stories of such Western legends as Calamity Jane [Martha Jane Canary (1848-1903)] and the O.K. Corral (Tombstone, Arizona). The single 19th century item is a letter, 19 Jan. 1840, Col. Richard Griffin, Greenwood, S.C., to his son-in-law, Zachariah [Williams] Carwile, Newberry, S.C., written at the time of Carwile's marriage to Griffin's daughter Mary Ann, defending his decision to settle his estate to his daughter and her children rather than to Carwile. Collection also includes genealogical information on the following South Carolina families: Carwile, Griffin, Hucks, LaFitte, McClintock, Marsh, Vardell, and Woolston.
